设奖目的

Purpose of the Award


教学与研究是学术人员的的两大基本职责,而优异的教学成绩与出色的具创造性的学术工作密切相关,互不可分。卓越教学奖正是表彰能够成功结合教学、研究双重角色的那些汕头大学教职人员,对所有的候选人评判的标准落在他们的教学成果以及他们对大学教学总体目标的贡献上。设立这个奖项的意图在于表现对汕大教职人员任职期间卓越教学成就的认可。教学成就不应以任教时间的长短评判,时间本身不作为成就认定的必要因素。

Teaching and research are both essential duties of academic faculty members, and that excellence in teaching and excellence in creative and scholarly work go hand in hand. The Distinguished Teaching Award acknowledges the efforts of Shantou University faculty members who have successfully united these two roles, and those nominated are judged on their excellence in teaching and their contributions to the teaching mission of the University. The award is intended to recognize the distinguished teaching accomplishments of the faculty, accomplishments which may be exhibited at any time during a faculty member’s career at the University.  Evidence of accomplishment does not necessarily require long years of service, which in themselves would not be considered sufficient grounds for recognition.


作为对汕头大学教师卓越教学成果的鼓励,此奖项每年从理工及人文各选一名获奖者。考虑到医学院的本科教育与其它学科性质有别,汕头大学医学院将自行评选此项奖励。校本部两位卓越教学奖的获奖者将获得李嘉诚基金会的礼物以及费用全免自己指定地点的7日海外学术访问/交流。

This award program was initiated to encourage and reward excellence in teaching at Shantou University and each year, one award will be given to a faculty in the Sciences and one award will be given to a faculty in the Humanities.  Recognizing that the characteristics of the Medical College in the undergraduate program differ from that of other academic disciplines, the Shantou University Medical College will conduct their own award selection process.  The two Distinguished Teaching Award recipients from the main campus of Shantou University will receive a gift from the Li Ka Shing Foundation, and an all expenses paid 7-day visit to a foreign country of their choice to conduct academic visits and exchanges. 


适用性

Eligibility


由于卓越教学奖是对教师一贯优异教学质量的认可,此奖项的提名将只适用于过去四学期中教授常规课程不少于8门(平均每学期两门)的教师。所有教学满足此条件的教师都有被提名的资格。由于卓越教学奖代表教学上的最高成就,获奖教师在获奖后的5年内不可以再被提名。对于本学年不在校教师的提名将被延迟至教师返校后生效。

Because the intent of the Distinguished Teaching Award is to recognize faculty members with a sustained record of distinguished teaching, only those who have taught no less than eight regularly scheduled courses in the last four semesters ( an average of two scheduled courses per semester) are eligible to be nominated. All faculty/instructors who fit this criterion are eligible.  Recipients of the Distinguished Teaching Award should not be nominated for 5 years subsequent to the year they were honored as this award represents the highest level of teaching achievement.

Faculty on leave or sabbatical for this academic year will have their nomination postponed until such time as the candidate is in residence.

Criteria for Teaching Excellence


定义卓越教学的总体标准包括:


Ø             对于教授科目的掌握

Ø             在此领域研究的持续进步

Ø             组织课材以及令人信服的讲授能力

Ø             有效的设计和调整课程

Ø             激发学生独立思考的能力

Ø             鼓励入门学生对学科产生兴趣以及激励已有基础学生创造性工作的能力

Ø             学习以及教学的热情与活力

Ø             对学生研究项目的指导


As general guidelines to the definitions of excellence in teaching, criteria for the candidates include:


• command of the subject;

• continuous growth in the field of study;

• ability to organize course material and to present it cogently;

• effective design and redesign of courses;

• ability to inspire in students independent and original thinking;

• ability to encourage intellectual interests in beginning students and to stimulate advanced students to creative work;

• enthusiasm and vitality in learning and teaching;

• guidance of student research projects


卓越教学奖的评审委员会应为校学术委员会下属的一个临时性委员会。包括主席,评选委员会将由7人组成。由大学校长任命评选委员会的主席(主席必须是校学术委员会成员),而由主席向校长提名其余6名成员(所有成员必须是学校全职教师,其中至少有两人是校学术委员会成员)。评选委员会主席及其成员每年需更换以保证没有人连续两年保留在评选委员会中。

The Selection Committee for Distinguished Teaching Award will be an ad hoc committee of the Academic Committee.  Including the Chair, this Selection Committee will be composed of 7 members.  The President of the University will appoint the chair of the Selection Committee (who must be a member of the Academic Committee) who in turn will nominate for the approval of the President, the other 6 members of the Selection Committee (they must all be full time faculty and at least 2 must be members of the Academic Committee.)  Chair and membership of the Selection Committee should be changed every year so that no one person serves for 2 consecutive years on the Selection Committee. 

      

       如果评选委员会的成员成为候选人,主席将通知他/她不可以参与第一阶段的商讨和决定。如果他/她进入第二阶段,评选委员会主席将在得到校长的同意下替换此名评选委员会成员。

Should a member of the Selection Committee be nominated for the award, he/she will be notified by the Chair that he/she must withdraw from Stage One deliberations and decisions.  If he/she advances to Stage Two of the nomination process, the Chair of the Committee will recommend for the President's approval, a substitute to serve on the Selection Committee.


如果评选委员会的主席成为候选人,校长将在现有的担任校学术委员会成员的评选委员会成员中任命一名新的主席。同时,一名新的评审委员会成员会被邀请以填补空缺。

If the Chair of the Selection Committee is a candidate, the President will appoint an existing member who is a member of the Academic Committee to take over as Chair, and another faculty will be invited to fill that vacancy on the Selection Committee.

     

提名程序

Nomination Process


挑选卓越教学奖获奖者的程序分为两步。

Selection of Distinguished Teachers is a two-stage process.


第一阶段,各系提交以下文件用于提名候选人:

In Stage One, departments initiate nominations by submitting the following:

      

(1)一封院长/系主任或是系教学评估主管签署提名信;

(2)一张按时间顺序最近四学期的授课列表,注明每节课的授课学期以及大致的学生数量。

(3)一份独立的候选人最近四学期的授课评估结果总结(定性的或是定量的或是两者皆有),总结要表现出候选人和同系其他教师的比较。


(a) a nominating letter from the dean/department chair or head of the departmental committee on teaching or teaching evaluation;

(b) a chronological list of all courses taught during the last four semesters of residence noting the semester in which each course was taught and the approximate number of students enrolled;

(c) a separate summary (either qualitative or numerical or both) of the nominee's teaching evaluations for all the courses taught during the last four semesters of residence, especially as they compare to others in the department;


注意以上各要求无需咨询候选人或是争得候选人的同意。

Note that all of these requisites can be filled without consulting the candidate nor is their approval required for nomination.


由于大学希望在各学科中选拔最卓越的教学人员,因此评选委员会不鼓励各系提交多名候选人。

Since the university is interested in recognizing excellence in teaching across the spectrum of departments, the Selection Committee discourages departments from nominating more than one candidate each year for this award.


根据以上所列卓越教学的评判标准,各系可以自行推举、决定候选人。另外,所有系都应该注重学生的意见而且必须认真考虑学生的反馈和评估结果。就此,评选委员会建议在最后的决定中给予来自学生的评估25%的权重。

Keeping with the Criteria for Teaching Excellence listed above, each department can exercise their own process to come up with the final nomination.  In addition, all departments should be sensitive to student opinion and must give careful consideration to student feedback and evaluations.  Further more, the Selection Committee recommends that this consideration be given a 25% weight against the total.


在第一阶段,系主任可以由院长提名,而院长也可以由系教务委员会主管提名,但是评价他们的标准必须和对待其他老师的标准一致。最终,每系只可以提交一名候选人或是选择放弃提名权。

It is possible for Department Chairs to be nominated by their College Deans, and  College Deans can be nominated by the head of the departmental committee on teaching at this stage, but they should be assessed equally with the rest of the faculty in the department.  Ultimately there should be only one faculty nominee from each department.  Departments can also choose not to submit any candidate for consideration. 


第一阶段的限期

Deadline for Stage One


提名信、顺时的授课列表以及评估总结需要在每年的四月份提交。所有材料需要订装好,各部分中间做好标记或是划分界限。

The nominating letter, chronological list, summary of evaluation data are to be submitted by April.  All materials must be secured in a binder, with sections tabbed or otherwise demarcated. 


提名程序:第二阶段

Nomination Process: Stage Two

评选委员会将审阅所有第一阶段的提名并将选择不少于6名候选人进入下一步评审---其中3名来自理工3名来自人文。理工的候选人来自于理学院和工学院。人文的候选人将出自文学院、传媒学院、艺术学院、商学院和法学院,另外社科部、艺教中心以及体育部也划分在人文部分。5月份,提交候选人的各系会接到其候选人是否进入第二阶段的通知。

The Selection Committee will review the nominations from Stage One and select no less than six submissions for further consideration -- with at least three nominations each from the Sciences and three from Humanities.  The nominees for the Sciences will be drawn from all departments within the Colleges of Engineering and Sciences.  The nominees for the Humanities will be drawn from all the departments of the Colleges of Liberal Arts, Journalism, Art, Business and Law, in addition to Social Sciences, Performing Arts and Sports Division.  Each nominating department will be notified by May whether its candidate is a finalist for the award.


在第二阶段中,需要提交的补充材料包括:


(1)一份候选人对教学目的、目标以及经验的陈述;

(2)附有候选人电邮、家庭联系电话的简历;

(3)最近四学期候选人的课外教学职责列表(如,在教学委员会中的行政职责,担任指导教师情况,指导过的学位论文及硕士论文,参与过或主持过的资格考试);

(4)不超过三封支持信,可以包括,来自同事、现有学生的或来自以前学生的;

(5)最近四学期中两门课程学生评估的原始数据以及相应课程的学生成绩分布表格;

(6)在(5)中提交的两门课程的材料(教学大纲,考试,评分方式等)。


In Stage Two, supplemental materials submitted should include:


(a) a reflective statement of the candidate's teaching goals, objectives, and experiences, written by the candidate;

(b) the candidate's curriculum vitae, with email and home telephone number;

(c) a list of the candidate’s teaching responsibilities outside the classroom (e.g., administrative and committee assignments, dissertations and master’s theses supervised, qualifying examinations participated in and/or chaired) during the four semesters of residence;

(d) no more than three letters of support, including, as available, letters from campus colleagues, current students, and former students;

(e) raw data of student evaluations and grade distribution charts from two  courses in the most recent four semesters of residence ;

(f) ) supporting materials (syllabi, tests, grading practices, etc.) for the two courses   submitted for requirement (e) above, for which student evaluations have now been submitted.


此外,每位入围第二阶段的候选人都要接受至少两位评选委员的听课;时间和安排由任课候选人同听课的评选委员共同决定,并可以在提交补充材料前进行。

In addition, each finalist will be observed while teaching by at least two or more members of the Selection Committee; the time and place of the classroom observations will be arranged jointly by the respective candidates and the observing members of the committee, and can be conducted prior to deadline of submission of supplemental materials.


第二阶段

Deadline for Stage Two


候选人的补充材料于每年6月(具体时间每年度再通知)到期。听课应该安排在5月至6月期间教师及评选委员共同认为合适的时间。所有听课所得出的报告应在6月中旬之前提交。

The additional material on candidates is due June each year.  Classroom observations, however, should be scheduled prior to this date between May and June when the committee and the candidate so desire. All reports on classroom observation should be submitted by the mid-June to the Selection Committee. 


评奖以及公告

Award Selection and Announcement

评选委员会全体开会评审所有的支持性文件以及听课报告,以此评选每年度卓越教学奖的获奖者。每年度李嘉诚卓越教学奖的公布不应迟于每年6月下旬。

The Selection Committee will convene to review all supporting documents and classroom observation reports in order to select the recipients for the yearly Distinguished Teaching Award.  Announcement of the Li Ka Shing Distinguished Teaching Award  will be made no later than the end of June. 


颁奖典礼将会是毕业典礼的一部分。两位获奖者将被邀请上台向听众致大约3分钟的有关教学思想的讲话。

The award ceremony will be part of the Convocation Proceedings. The two award recipients will be invited to make a 3 minute acceptance speech articulating their teaching philosophies to the audience.
